Interesting facts about Mortal Kombat II
-Regarded as one of the most controversial and successful games of all time.
-Mortal Kombat II’s release was a monumental success. It broke many records through its sales both in the arcade and for home consoles. A well selling arcade game, at the time, was considered to have sold around 5,000 units over the span of its life. By the end of 1996, the arcade version of MKII had sold nearly 25,000 units. Mortal Kombat II for home consoles had the best opening week in history, only to be later be eclipsed by Donkey Kong Country a few months later. However, by the end of the first week, sales were over $50 million which surpassed initial box office results of that season’s blockbuster movies such as Forrest Gump, True Lies, The Mask, and even the Lion King. By the end of 2002, the home console versions exceeded $400 million in gross sales.
-The developers consider the SNES version to be the best home console version, especially when compared to its arcade counterpart. It was also fortunate that the ESRB wouldn’t be in effect until November of that year, 3 months after Mortal Kombat II would be released for home consoles. The SNES version was also awarded numerous awards between 1994 & 1995 from many different publications, and is considered to be one of the best games of all time.
-According to How Long to Beat’s website the average play through takes about 4.3 hours to complete.
-According to VGChartz, over 4 million units have sold worldwide.
-Currently, about 5 games are sold per day, the most popular being for the SNES, while the Saturn version is the most expensive.
