40th Anniversary: Zork – The Great Underground Empire by Infocom

Interesting facts about Zork
-According to How Long to Beat’s website the average play through takes about 3 hours to complete.
-According to IMDB, Zork currently has 63 votes and a 7.7/10 rating,
-Infocom reported that they sold 378,000 copies by the end of 1986.

-Written by MIT students, Zork was originally intended to never be sold. However, the original creators Tim Anderson, Bruce Daniels, Dave Lebling, and Marc Blank worked on the game from 1977-1979. Anderson, Lebline, and Blank went on to create Infocom. While they wished to write business software, they decided to release Zork for a way to make some early money. Due to the game’s size, it was released in parts as Zork I: The Great Underground Empire, Zork II: The Wizard of Froboz, and Zork III: The Dungeon Master.

-Before the creation of Infocom, the only way to play Zork was through a remote connection on ARPAnet, a precursor the world wide web we know today, that only colleges had access to for the most part. However, the game still managed to take on a cult following despite the narrow list of people who could even play it.
