Interesting facts about Samurai Shodown
-According to How Long to Beat’s website the average play through takes about an hour to complete.
-According to VGChartz, Samurai Shodown over 470,000 units in Japan alone between the SNES and NEO GEO.
-Currently, about 6 games are sold per week.
-One of the first fighting games to introduce weapon based combat.
-Set in the late 18th century, the game features many authentic Japanese music styles according to that period.
-Video game violence was a pretty hot topic when Samurai Shodown was released, resulting in most versions of the game outside of Japan to be heavily censored. Changing blood to different colors, “white sweat,” and removing the graphic fatalities.
-The censoring was also an interesting mechanic, for the NEO GEO, the censoring was controlled via software in the console. Playing the American version swapped the blood color to white, and removed graphic fatalities. But, taking the same cartridge into its Japanese counterpart, the game would render red blood with all fatalities intact.
